Engaging students in the study of genetics is essential to building a deep understanding of heredity, a core idea in the life sciences (NRC 2012). By integrating into the curriculum the stories of famous scientists who studied genetics (e.g., Mendel, Franklin, Watson, and Crick), teachers remind their students that science is a human endeavor. Students learn about the actual methods of scientists, and they expand their understanding of the nature of science. In the fast-paced, technology-driven world of today, students are accustomed to acquiring information through cell phones, tablets, and computers. The purpose of this article is to demonstrate how students can actively explore digital content and apply what they have learned through role play. The integration of digital resources with a role-play assessment provides an engaging hook, as well as accountability for time spent online. (Contains 1 figure and 4 online resources.)
