Procedure Guidelines for Health Care of Special Needs Students in the School Setting.

This manual presents detailed instructions for delivering health care services to students with special health needs within the school setting. Individual chapters address the following areas: dressing; vital signs; height and weight; fluids/nourishment; medications; oxygen and use of the respirator/ventilator; suctioning; respiratory therapy; urinary tract care; bowel and bladder care; applying dressings; use of warm and cool applications; personal hygiene; decubitus ulcers; positioning; exercises; ambulation; casts, braces, and prostheses (observation, alignment, functioning); intake/output; specimen collection; specimen testing; care of equipment; and charting. Information provided for each area includes indication of school personnel who can appropriately provide the care, training needs, and procedures (usually including purpose, equipment, general principles, precautions, and specific steps). Appendixes provide: a listing of technical skills needed to meet health care needs by area; criteria and competencies of persons providing health services; and instructions for handwashing and handling body fluids.
