Decision-Making in Families Engaged in Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Programs: A Qualitative Study
Wainscott, Sarah Dawson
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Gallaudet University
Families are faced with numerous decisions shortly after their infants are identified with a hearing loss. The goal of the study was to gain insight into the family decision-making process including how families receive and respond to information and how family priorities and concerns for their child's future relate to the decisions they make. Of particular interest was how decisions are shaped by individual family context. Six families with infants who were deaf or hard of hearing between the ages of 10 and 18 months were interviewed and completed rating scales related to their priorities and perspectives, and concerning their choices of technology, communication and services. A "Family Decision-Making Model" based on the findings of the study summarizes and conceptually organizes the components of the decision-making process and suggests how professionals can "tune in" to individual families to provide targeted support that facilitates the decision making process.
