Improving Educational Opportunities for the Adult Basic Education Student with a Specific Learning Disability: One to One Volunteer Tutor Program. A 310 Special Demonstration Project.
Edwards, Lois F.; Bell, Bernadette S.
This manual describes the implementation of a demonstration project at Daytona Beach Community College (DBCC) to: (1) develop an individual education plan to enable adult students with a specific learning disability to reach an 8th grade level of proficiency; (2) recruit volunteers and train them as tutors; and (3) develop a series of in-service training workshop sessions for Adult Basic Education (ABE) adjunct faculty, volunteers, and other interested faculty and personnel. The initial sections of the manual explain the need for the project, its objectives, and the dissemination process used to recruit volunteers and promote the project. Following information on volunteer recruitment and orientation, and tutor training, a guide for instruction and five learning modules are presented to guide the tutor in the planning and presentation of lessons which meet the student's needs and follow his/her individual educational plan. The modules cover phonics, spelling, sight vocabulary, reading, and handwriting. Next, the manual looks at the student assessment and placement process, providing samples of the forms used. Finally, instructional materials are listed; data on tutors, students, and faculty are provided; and evaluation procedures are explained. (EJV)
