Dia de los Muertos: A Joyful Mexican Celebration
Markello, Carrie; Bean, Kathy
SchoolArts: The Art Education Magazine for Teachers, v105 n2 p41-43 Oct 2005
This brief article describes the history, traditions, and food of the Mexican holiday known as Dia de los Muertos, or the Day of the Day, and explores classroom and studio activities that teachers can do with their students. Teachers are urged to encourage students to explore the topic of the Day of the Dead, comparing it to other traditions and art surrounding the dead, such as the practices used in ancient Egypt and the American tradition of Halloween. Art activities include the making of processional Day of the Dead masks and miniature "ofrendas," or altars, for depicting a deceased relative or person the students wish to honor.
