The authors collaborated on hosting a "Spring Inspire Day." planned and delivered by preservice elementary teachers as a social studies/science methods project. Projects that have authentic application opportunities can make learning meaningful for prospective teachers as well as elementary students. With the impetus for an integrated methods focus in place, the authors chose the concept of "change" to organize the two content areas. From this broad concept, they chose Farming Communities as the "topical theme" to begin developing social studies and science lessons. Preservice teachers broke into trios and were responsible for writing a proposal to submit for "Inspire Day" lessons using the theme while weaving both the "Next Generation Science Standards" (NGSS) and National Council of Social Studies (NCSS) Standards into the lessons. This article describes how fifth graders take an interdisciplinary field trip to a farm and learn science and local history in the process at "Spring Inspire Day."
