Simple Data Sets for Distinct Basic Summary Statistics
Lesser, Lawrence M.
Teaching Statistics: An International Journal for Teachers, v33 n1 p9-11 Spr 2011
It is important to avoid ambiguity with numbers because unfortunate choices of numbers can inadvertently make it possible for students to form misconceptions or make it difficult for teachers to tell if students obtained the right answer for the right reason. Therefore, it is important to make sure when introducing basic summary statistics that students are given data sets that yield a clearer view of student reasoning by having distinct answers for typical quantities of interest. This article offers, with accompanying rationale, simple data sets that produce distinct values of certain basic summary statistics. (Contains 1 table.)
