Gender under Incomplete Acquisition: Heritage Speakers' Knowledge of Noun Categorization
Polinsky, Maria
Heritage Language Journal, v6 n1 p40-71 Spr 2008
The author discusses a study of gender assignment (noun categorization) in heritage Russian and presents issues in the methodology of heritage language study. To anticipate the conclusions of this article, the gender assignment data presented argue for the systematicity of what emerges under incomplete acquisition. The system is different from its correspondent system in the baseline, but it is still coherent, in its own way. Another general point that this article makes is that by using simple experimental methodology, crucial linguistic data on incomplete acquisition can be obtained. (Contains 6 tables, 12 figures and 7 notes.)
