Paraprofessionals, sometimes referred to as teachers' aides, often referred to as simply "paras," are a critical component of special education programs. They can play an important role in music classrooms as well. Their responsibilities may include providing instructional support in small groups or to individual students, modifying teaching materials, implementing behavioral management plans, collecting data on students, or providing personal care assistance. Paraprofessionals are not licensed to teach, but can, under the supervision of a licensed teacher, provide instructional assistance to students with special needs. This article offers suggested topics that a teacher can discuss with paraprofessionals as well as some tips for maximizing the effects of the paraprofessional in music class. (Contains 1 table.)
