Intended for use in family day care, preschool centers, professional preparation institutions, and in homes, this comprehensive health education curriculum for 3- through 5-year-old children contains units designed to sequentially teach concepts about physical health, mental health, family living, and safety. Contents include the following subjects: (1) physical health (the five senses, hygiene, dental health, nutrition, exercise, relaxation, sleep, and smoking), (2) mental health (self esteem, identifying and expressing feelings, the feelings of others, and emotional neglect), (3) family living (family members, how families begin, life before birth, growing in families, sexual abuse and family changes involving death, divorce, new babies, and moving), and (4) safety (danger warnings, getting help, pedestrian safety, auto seat restraints, preventing poisoning, weather safety, fire safety, and physical abuse). Each lesson plan includes behavioral objectives; background information on each topic; a list of necessary materials and resources; songs, poems, rhythmic activities; detailed instructions for child activities; a special component suggesting activities for enhancing children's self esteem; an activity for parent and child; and, for duplication, patterns, worksheets, and letters to parents.
