Preventing Injuries, Promoting Creativity
Maloney, Betsy
Journal of Dance Education, v4 n3 p100-101 2004
Simultaneously promoting a safe learning environment that encourages students to express their creative voices while exploring the rudiments of dance technique can be difficult. This article discusses how the author has learned to do it effectively by employing a few simple classroom strategies. To prevent injuries during class, the author offers three important steps: (1) go over the classroom rules and expectations; (1) establish a class pace that does not tax dancers' growing bodies; and (3) teach students how to "freeze." The author stresses that dance educators must accept responsibility for preventing injuries so that their young students can continue to wiggle, bounce, spin, jump, and dance without getting hurt.
