Motivating and Evaluating Growth in Ballet Technique
White, Julie Hammond
Journal of Dance Education, v12 n3 p109-112 2012
In teaching young dancers ballet, the utilization of effective assessments in partnership with supportive and creative teaching strategies can transform not only the learning experience, but the dancer as well. In this article, the author shares a "growth grade rubric" that specifically addresses three areas in ballet training: (1) skills and knowledge in technique; (2) skills and knowledge in performance abilities; and (3) professional dispositions. It is the author's position that all three areas must be in simultaneous development for artistry to eventually emerge. A rubric that clearly disseminates how to arrive at this destination can empower learners to be true partners in this objective and equip teachers to an even greater degree as their learned guides. Although the rubric is ultimately designed to evaluate a dancer's immediate and ongoing progress in ballet--identifying growth as well as potential--it can also be an invaluable vehicle for feedback, a means to inspire greater enjoyment of ballet in the classroom, and a way to foster critical thinking and self-reflection. Along with suggested applications of the rubric in instruction and evaluation, additional benefits and possibilities of using and gathering data produced from the rubric are discussed, such as supporting dance education advocacy efforts in the schools and reinforcing high standards in the ballet curriculum.
