Humphreys, Kathryn
Teaching Artist Journal, v9 n4 p240-242 2011
Dance education provides a language that allows students and teachers to express themselves in new ways and to think through ideas differently. All students deserve the opportunity to learn things in new ways, to internalize information and rephrase it, to understand their world and contribute to it. All students deserve the opportunity to discover their own creativity and the art form in which their creativity is most fluid. Students in a dance classroom learn more than the elements of dance--body, energy, space, and time--they must create and memorize movement ideas and phrases, and manipulate a basic movement vocabulary to create meaning. The author's approach to dance education is finding common ground and growing together from there. It is not simply arts integration or art for art's sake, but something in between, a process of creating space for students to learn and explore the language of dance, to develop a vocabulary and see where it takes them. A way of working with schools to constantly discover new ways of teaching, of incorporating the art and principles of dance education into each community.
