An Examination of Critical Approaches to Interdisciplinary Dance Performance
Kennedy, Michelle
Research in Dance Education, v10 n1 p63-74 Mar 2009
As artists seek new ways to reflect an increasingly digital and global culture, theatrical dance in the UK and Europe has seen a growing collaboration and cross-fertilisation between forms of dance, theatre, visual art, film and technology. As the boundaries between artistic disciplines continue to blur, it seems clear that dance audiences need to examine how to engage with these increasingly multi-layered performances. How should the reader critically approach interdisciplinary dance performance? Can the current models and frames used for analysing dance be used to gain an understanding and appreciation of this cross-artform approach to dance-making? This paper explores interdisciplinary dance performance and examines three existing critical approaches that can be used by readers to analyse cross-artform dance. The paper provides a brief overview of the development of interdisciplinary dance performance and examines the work of current contemporary choreographers working in the UK and Europe. The paper then explores three current theoretical approaches that can be used to analyse dance: each of the selected models is described and applied to the dance work "Justitia" (2007) by Jasmin Vardimon. The paper seeks to identify the possibilities and limitations of the three critical approaches for the analysis of interdisciplinary dance. (Contains 1 note and 5 online resources.)
