Xchanging the World.
Blythe, Chris; Richards, Dave
This activity pack goes beyond exposing the low prices paid to commodity producers and explores broader structures that govern world trade and produce poverty and inequality. The pack encourages young people to look beyond the labels and consider the responsibilities consumers have toward the people who feed and clothe the world, or make the luxuries that most take for granted. Some activities in the pack introduce the issue of trade, and other activities examine different aspects of trade. The activities, games, and discussions can be addressed as described in the pack (with the help of a facilitator), or adapted to the interests or knowledge level of the students. Following an introduction and a "using-this-pack" section are these activities sections: (1) "Trade Game"; (2)"Cut-Flowers"; (3) "Flower Chains"; (4) "The World in Your Kitchen"; (5) "The World in Your Classroom"; (6) "From Start to Finish"; (7) "Nike Strike"; (8) "Industry without Chimneys"; (9) "Goan Sands"; (10) "The Road to Marrakech"; (11) "Uneven Playing Fields" (Board Game); (12) "Trade Sculpture"; (13) "Make a Difference"; (14) "Hearts and Minds"; and (15) "Xchanging Words" (Crossword). Contains a resources section that offers books for background reading, other teaching materials on the issue of trade, addresses of campaigning organizations, and Web sites that provide information and perspectives from all sides of the trade debate.
