Research Review
Serig, Dan
Teaching Artist Journal, v9 n3 p193-198 2011
This article presents the author's review of research about material culture and its relevance to teaching artists. In this review, three themes emerged that may provide a conceptual framework. This framework may offer a base of understanding from which teaching artists may, in turn, be able to situate some of their practices or create new possibilities. These themes, while by no means exhaustive of the research on material culture, also provide additional evidence supporting Pahl and Rowsell's (2010) theory of artifactual literacy. In closing, the author proposes a three-phased cluster of concepts within which the teaching artist may consider material culture. From this kindred cluster of concepts, a hybridized approach to material culture studies within the practices of the arts, teaching, and learning may be operationalized. This grouping synthesizes the findings from this study of material culture and artifactual literacy.
