Creating a Culture of General Education Assessment
Wong, Erwin J.; Campos, Francisca C.; Buxton, Ralph W.
Assessment Update, v20 n6 p1-2, 15-16 Nov-Dec 2008
Many people know the myth of Sisyphus, the ancient king who committed an offense against the gods and was condemned for an eternity to roll a boulder unsuccessfully to the top of a steep hill. Each time he reached the summit, the boulder, of its own weight, would roll back to the bottom, whereupon Sisyphus would have to begin laboriously rolling the boulder up the hill again. As those at Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) have attempted to create a culture of general education assessment on their campus, it has felt at times as though they were following Sisyphus's well-worn path. In this article, the authors tell the story of how they created a culture of general education assessment.
