This report summarizes a study of the systems of mass communication in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) that concentrated on the ideological and political bases of mass media as they developed after the Second World War. Topics discussed include (1) the history of journalism in the GDR, (2) the roles of the various media in that country, (3) media licensing, (4) the management of the press, (5) factory and enterprise newspapers, (6) management of sound broadcasting, (7) radio services and programs, (8) the achievements of GDR television, (9) dramatic art in television, (10) the state-run news agency ("Allgemeiner Deutscher Nachrichtendienst"), (11) journalism in the system of mass communication, (12) the content of newspapers and media programs, (13) general principles of journalism in the GDR, (14) journalism and legal relations, and (15) publishing houses, printing shops, marketing, studios, and broadcasting technology.
