Exploring Solid-State Structure and Physical Properties: A Molecular and Crystal Model Exercise
Bindel, Thomas H.
Journal of Chemical Education, v85 n6 p822-824 Jun 2008
A crystal model laboratory exercise is presented that allows students to examine relations among the microscopic-macroscopic-symbolic levels, using crystalline mineral samples and corresponding crystal models. Students explore the relationship between solid-state structure and crystal form. Other structure-property relationships are explored. The exercise also reinforces Lewis dot structures, VSEPR theory, and the identification of molecular geometries and coordination geometries. (Contains 1 table, 2 figures and 7 notes.)
