Wider Opportunities: Combining Literacy and Employment Training for Women. Executive Summary of the Female Single Parent Literacy Project Case Studies.
Hirschoff, Paula
This report contains summaries of case studies of five literacy projects for women conducted under the auspices of Wider Opportunities for Women's Female Single Parent Literacy Project. The programs described in the case studies are the following: (1) Non-Traditional Employment for Women, New York City; (2) Access for Women: Expanding Options for Teen Mothers, Brooklyn; (3) Midwest Women's Center: Women's Apprenticeship and Nontraditional Training, Chicago; (4) the STEP (Strategies to Elevate People) Foundation: Mary Crowley Academy, Dallas; and (5) Wider Opportunities for Women, Inc., Washington, D.C. Each summary provides information on the community, the site, the literacy program (clientele, program principles, strategies and techniques, support services, staffing, funding, and program results), and plans/recommendations for the future. In addition, an executive summary delineates the common threads that run through the five case studies: internal barriers to women's success, and external barriers to women's progress (instability; inaccessible, inappropriate services; lack of support services; and inadequate goal setting) that have been addressed by the programs described.
