Putting the Fun in Fundraising
Simons, Dave
Teaching Music, v16 n1 p54-56, 58-59 Aug 2008
Today, school districts are faced with perpetually shrinking budgets, and all too often, music programs suffer the most. As a result, fundraising, once considered a supplemental effort, is now an integral part of the budgetary process for school trips and other extras. To make the most of their fundraising endeavors, music departments and affiliated booster clubs continue to partner with professional fundraising companies, while often complementing these efforts with an array of homegrown activities. This article presents a roundup of fundraising tips and techniques from a cross section of school systems. The author discusses seven steps for successful fundraising. These include: (1) Get started early; (2) Avoid fundraising burnout; (3) Plan annual events; (4) Small school? Think big; (5) Something old, something new; (6) Get parents to pitch in; and (7) Sort out the money handling up front.
