This article examines racial identity development for white counsellors in relation to the development of multicultural counselling competencies. Changes in demographics should increase the frequency of cross-cultural counselling experiences for counsellors. White counsellors are encouraged to engage in training and self-assessment around culture and race to understand how these factors impact work with culturally different clients. The author's personal journey toward multicultural counselling competence is described. Two white racial identity development models and training recommendations for practitioners, counsellors-in-training, supervisors, and educators are examined to foster understanding and growth toward becoming multiculturally competent.
