Early Years Children Think Too!
Mooney, Laura
Primary Science, n130 p32-34 Nov 2013
During a recent theme on "Ourselves," Laura Mooney's class focused on height and looking at similarities and differences between a range of objects. This involved not only looking at each other, but also linked to their self-portrait development, where they had been learning about their facial features and comparing them to other people's. As part of their cross-curricular links they also looked at colour mixing of appropriate shades, simple measuring, and basic shapes. An initial discussion to elicit the children's prior knowledge and understanding indicated that they held significant misconceptions related to comparisons of themselves, one being the correlation between age and height. This article describes how young children are able to think through concepts and use science skills.
