To provide current demographic and needs assessment information for public and private agencies serving migrants, a survey was conducted among farmers and the migrant workers they employed. Of 228 migrant labor camps in western and central New York, 57 were selected for study by a stratified random sampling procedure which assured adequate representation of all ethnic groups. Interviews were obtained in 44 of the 57 camps (77%); 36 farmer interviews and 176 migrant interviews were conducted. The farmer questionnaire dealt primarily with the history of the farm, crop-related changes, and recent and foreseeable changes in the use of migrant workers. The migrant questionnaire obtained extensive demographic data, work history (including experience with crew leaders), and information about contact with the agencies intended to serve migrants in New York State. Findings showed ethnic differences in choice of crop, time spend in New York, family situation, and income. With the exception of food stamps and child care and health programs, no federal, state, or local aid programs were heavily used. Agencies providing services need to consider effective ways of coordinating services and publicizing their programs among migrants. (JH)
