The Play Professional in the United Kingdom
Millbank, Anna-Marie
Teaching Elementary Physical Education, v16 n2 p30-32 Mar 2005
Playwork is a respected field of study composed of experts who have studied the theories and practices of play for the purposes of training other individuals in best practices to better facilitate children's play. The profession is founded on the belief that play is an essential childhood element and the right of every child. In this article, the author talks about Boredom Busters as a United Kingdom playscheme. Boredom Busters is an all-day holiday playscheme for children ages 4 1/2 to 12 years old. The playscheme offers activities to both disabled and nondisabled children and prides itself on offering quality play opportunities to children having autism, a wide spectrum of learning and developmental needs (global delay), and cerebral palsy, among others. Here, the author presents sample playwork games and activities for elementary school age children, and these are: (1) sticky toffee tag; (2) wizards-giants-elves; (3) crocodile, crocodile; and (4) beans.
