Problems as Possibilities: Problem-Based Learning for K-16 Education. 2nd Edition.
Torp, Linda; Sage, Sara
This book serves as a guide for educators who want to know about and use problem-based learning (PBL) in their schools. Chapter 1 provides anecdotal reports by teachers and students, including examples from universities as well as elementary and secondary education. Chapter 2 gives an overview of PBL for those who want to learn more about the theory supporting its practice. Chapter 3 presents historical and other background information about PBL. Chapter 4 presents a model of the teaching and learning events of PBL, such as defining the problem, finding its solution, and debriefing the problem. Chapter 5 deals with designing a PBL curriculum, including thinking about context, understanding students' learning characteristics and interests, and generating and playing with ideas. Chapter 6 discusses implementing PBL, detailing such topics as the new roles teachers and students take on in a nontraditional curriculum, facilitating student understanding, and managing the PBL process. Chapter 7 addresses assessment in PBL, showing how to focus assessment vision, assess the assessors, and use assessment to create new learning. Chapter 8 examines issues and stakeholders' questions on developing a PBL initiative in schools, universities, and communities. An appendix contains information about the Problem-Based Learning Network and electronic mailing lists, among other resources. (Contains 140 references.) (RT)
