Nurturing Care for China's Orphaned Children
Cotton, Janice N.; Edwards, Carolyn Pope; Zhao, Wen; Gelabert, Jeronia Muntaner
Young Children, v62 n6 p58-60, 62-63 Nov 2007
Half the Sky, an international NGO, works in partnership with Chinese national and provincial governments inside state-run orphanages (welfare institutions). Through their infant nurture programs infants and toddlers in institutions begin to thrive through primary relationship-based care by trained community paraprofessionals. In preschool enrichment programs children ages 2 to 7 become eager, competent learners, given the chance to participate in education led by teachers providing play and learning opportunities inspired by the Italian Reggio Emilia approach.
