Crossing the Line from Physical Discipline to Child Abuse: How Much Is Too Much?.
Whipple, Ellen E.; Richey, Cheryl A.
Child Abuse & Neglect: The International Journal, v21 n5 p431-44 May 1997
A search of the literature to differentiate among definitions of physical discipline, corporal punishment, and physical child abuse identified five studies which revealed that abusive parents spanked their children more often than did nonabusive parents. Aggregated data from nonabusive parents suggested a "normal range" of daily spanking frequencies from 0 to 5.73 times in 24 hours. (DB)
