Selected Research on Work Team Diversity.
Ruderman, Marian N., Ed.; And Others
This book contains seven exploratory research papers from a conference on diversity and workplace teams. The authors examine diversity in terms of a variety of attributes, including race and sex. The book is divided into three sections. The first contains three papers that deal with the management of diverse teams. The following papers are included: "The Cost of Leading Diversity: Effects of Group Diversity on Leaders' Perceptions" (Margarita C. Mayo, James R. Meindl, Juan-Carlos Pastor); "Culture and Leadership among Taiwanese and U.S. Workers: Do Values Influence Leadership Ideals?" (Keith James, Dz-Lyang Chen, Russell Cropanzano); and "The Effect of Value Differences on Social Interaction Processes and Job Outcomes: Implications for Managing Diversity" (Michele J. Gelfand, Kristine M. Kuhn, Phanikiran Radhakrishnan). The second section focuses on empirical assessment of the impact of team composition on group processes and outputs. These three studies took place in organizations in which diversity has been largely neglected. The papers are the following: "Personality Diversity and Its Relationship to Managerial Team Productivity" (Keith M. Eigel, Karl W. Kuhnert); "Effects of Group Diversity on Perceptions of Group and Self among Scientists and Engineers" (Nancy DiTomaso, Rene Cordero, George F. Farris); and "The Limitations of Organizational Demography: Can Diversity Climate Be Enhanced in the Absence of Teamwork?" (Ellen Ernst Kossek, Susan C. Zonia, Willard Young). The one paper in the third section--"The Vicious and Virtuous Facets of Workforce Diversity" (Sumita Raghuram and Raghu Garud)--offers a theoretical treatment of the issues involved in enhancing the processes of diverse work teams. The book's editors, Marian N. Ruderman, Martha W. Hughes-James, and Susan E. Jackson, provide an overview of the papers and directions for further research. Biographical sketches of the authors are included. Each paper contains references. (KC)
