America's Heritage: An Exploratory Cross-Cultural Study of Languages.
Nickels, Virginia
A one-year course in which five languages were introduced in conjunction with the study of European and Arkansas state history is described. The course was designed to provide eighth grade students with a basis for deciding whether to study a foreign language. The main goal was to provide awareness of foreign language through conversation and the history and culture of the people it reflects. Grammar per se was not included, and written work was minimal. The languages introduced were: Spanish, French, Italian, German, and Cherokee. Activities included the following: films, songs, games; learning the alphabet and sounds of letters; learning numbers and how to tell time; learning greetings, days of the week, months, and seasons; colors; weather expressions; members of the family; learning body idioms and foreign gestures; and studying Christmas customs in each country. At the end of each unit, tests on history, culture, and language were given. Because there was no textbook, all materials had to be selected, edited, reworded, and condensed/expanded. A list of materials used is included. (SW)
