The No Fuss Library Club
Fullner, Sheryl Kindle
Library Media Connection, v25 n3 p36-38 Nov-Dec 2006
When budgets are especially tight, librarians often do not have the spare time for innovation, yet these conditions require the most creativity. This article describes how to set up a once-a-week Library Club that meets during the lunch hour. Since many schools have multiple lunch hours, materials can be set up for two or three lunch times at once. The Club is held in the library. The author advises against getting bogged down by the mechanics of a Library Club and to think of the benefits. For the librarian, the advantages far outweigh the small inconveniences of preparation and minuscule expense. Jobs that would be ruled out for a librarian whose priorities are teaching, reference service, and collection development are condensed into a manageable lunch half-hour and the result is, instant gratification for the librarian and proud satisfaction for the student. Included are theme and activity suggestions for each week of the month such as: Week two of each month is devoted to book marks; or week three of each month is for book covers. In one activity, students stage an ugly hunt and scavenge through shelves for the 5 most unappealing books they can find. If if they have not been checked out in the last two years, they scan and delete them from the database.
