Rodriguez, Carlos Xavier, Ed.
MENC: The National Association for Music Education
This versatile and insightful book discusses trends and issues related to popular music in the classroom. Topics covered include the definition of popular music, the "us versus them" dilemma, teacher education, effective teaching methods, and choosing quality repertoire. Fourth in the Northwestern University Music Education Leadership series. Following a preface, "The Northwestern University Music Education Leadership Seminars" by Bennett Reimer, this book is introduced by Carlos Xavier Rodriguez's "Bringing It All Back Home: The Case for Popular Music in the Schools." The book is then divided into three sections. The first section, The Broader Perspective, includes the following chapters: (1) "Popular Music in Music Education: Toward a New Conception of Musicality" (Carlos Xavier Rodriguez); (2) "'Pop' Goes...? Taking Popular Music Seriously" (Wayne D. Bowman); (3) "Popular Music: The Very Idea of Listening to It" (Theodore Gracyk); and (4) "None So Deaf: Toward a New Pedagogy of Popular Music" (Martha Bayles). The second section, Historical Perspectives, contains: (5) "Popular Music in the American Schools: What History Tells Us about the Present and the Future" (Jere T. Humphreys); and (6) "Teaching the Historical Context of Popular Music: A View" (William R. Lee). The final section of the book, International Perspectives, includes: (7) "Music Education in the Aquarian Age: A Transatlantic Perspective (or 'How Do You Make Horses Thirsty?')" (George Odam); (8) "Reciprocity and Exchange: Popular Music in Australian Secondary Schools" (Kathryn L. Wemyss); (9) "Preparing Teachers for Popular Music Processes and Practices (Scott E. Emmons); (10) "K-12 Music Education at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum (Craig Woodson); (11) "Pop Music Ensemble in Music Education" (George Boespflug); (12) "Of Concert Bands and Garage Bands: Creating Democracy through Popular Music" (Randall Everett Allsup); (13) "What Can Music Educators Learn from Popular Musicians?" (Lucy Green); and (14) "When We Question Popular Music in Education, What Is the Question?" (Robert A. Cutietta).
