Stochastic and Historical Resonances of the Unit in Physics and Psychometrics
Fisher, William P., Jr.
Measurement: Interdisciplinary Research and Perspectives, v9 n1 p46-50 2011
Humphry's article, "The Role of the Unit in Physics and Psychometrics," offers fundamental clarifications of measurement concepts that Fisher hopes will find a wide audience. In particular, parameterizing discrimination while preserving statistical sufficiency will indeed provide greater flexibility in accounting "for the effects of empirical factors on the unit of a scale." The beauty and elegance of the mathematical principles and theory presented in the paper provide a basis for methodical approaches across fields and applications not available to local, ad hoc, solutions. This commentary briefly elaborates two other issues implied by the article: stochastic resonance and the role of the Standard Model in the history of science.
