Why Not Competence? A Guide for Training Special Education Aides.
Semrau, Barbara L.; And Others
The manual is designed for use by trainers of special education teacher aides to provide a competency based course which will enable teacher aides to assist in the implementation of the requirements of P.L. 94-142 (the Education for All Handicapped Children Act). The first section provides background information to give trainers the grasp of concepts behind the movement to upgrade educational services to special needs populations. The second section discusses the selection of teacher aides, placement, and supervision and guidance. The final section contains the trainees' manual with training suggestions (such as role plays, discussions, and audiovisual aids) listed in the margin. The training program includes the following five modules: "Teacher and Teacher Aide Working Together;""Understanding the Special Child;""Teaching the Special Child;""Understanding Families;" and "Job Skills." An annotated bibliography of training films, filmstrips, and videocassettes is appended. (PHR)
