Designing and Implementing an Effective Web Site: A Case Study and Project for the Choral Music Program at Kent State University.
Garrison, Nan
The existence of the World Wide Web has changed the way businesses and educational institutions, among others, present themselves to the public. The Web provides a new means by which institutions can promote programs, disseminate information and act as a link to related Web resources. This study researches the design of Web pages and presents a case study of the development of a Web site for the Choral Music Program at Kent State University (KSU), Ohio. Discussion includes the process of discovering what the information needs are, how to attract students to the program, how to lay out an effective Web page (including the choice of fonts, colors, pictures, backgrounds, et cetera), and the best way to include sound files of pieces performed by different KSU choirs. A survey and evaluation of choral music program Web pages at other colleges and universities contributed to the design process and gave further ideas of items that might be included in the Web page being developed. The survey was followed by a search for and evaluation of music and choral Internet resources that could be included on the reference links page. The successful conclusion of this project was the mounting of a completed Web site for the Choral Music Program. Printouts of the Web site and the Web site code are appended.
