Arizona Traffic Safety Education, K-8. Pedestrian Safety, Grade 2.
Mesa Public Schools, AZ.
One in a series designed to assist Arizona elementary and junior high school teachers in developing children's traffic safety skills, this curriculum guide contains eight lessons on pedestrian safety for use in grade 2. Introductory information provided for the teacher includes basic highway safety concepts, stressing communication methods for highway users, visibility and judgmental problems, predictability of behavior, and passenger safety; instructions for using this program, explaining evaluation methods; and Arizona laws governing pedestrians. The lessons cover the following subjects: the safest route to and from school; traffic lights; safety symbols and signs; crossing streets at uncontrolled intersections; emergency vehicles and their effect on pedestrian behavior; identifying hazards; and special precautions pedestrians should use according to the time of day and the weather. For each lesson a complete plan is provided, incorporating objectives, key points, a list of needed materials, suggested basic and enrichment activities, student assessment procedures, and additional resource materials. The types of activities include field trips, learning poems, drawing and coloring, class discussions, and simulations of pedestrian situations. (ELG)
