Boosting Social and Emotional Competence
Beland, Kathy
Educational Leadership, v64 n7 p68-71 Apr 2007
Beland maintains that high school students will need a high level of skill in the social and emotional arena to be ready for competitive employment in the 21st century. In a 2006 survey, human resource professionals said five skills were most crucial to high school graduates' success: professionalism/work ethic; teamwork; oral communications; ethics/social responsibility, and reading comprehension. Beland notes that four of the five skills are squarely in the area of social and emotional competence, and that the oft-tested domains of math and science talent were far down this list. Beland describes creative ways that high school teachers integrate training in five key components of social and emotional learning--social awareness, self-awareness, self-management, relationship skills, and responsible decision making--into curriculum and classroom practice.
