Secondary Level Consumer Education. Consumer Education Materials Project.
Baecher, Charlotte; And Others
Programs to help teachers take advantage of their secondary level students' consumer experiences, to add practical dimension to various subject areas, and to prepare students to function effectively and responsibly in today's complex marketplace are described in this publication, one of a series of six prepared by the Educational Division of Consumers Union for the Consumer Education Materials Project (CEMP). Three groups of case studies illustrate different ways in which consumer education is introduced into secondary school curricula. First, consumer education is used as an integrated component of regular course material. Second, it is used as an interdisciplinary effort. Third, consumer education is presented as a separate or minicourse. Additional case studies included in the volume describe how teachers have alternated the traditional classroom approach with product testing, comparative shopping, independent study, and community service projects. Included with each case study are suggestions on how the programs and techniques can be modified or expanded for use in a variety of educational settings. A separate section offers specific value clarification strategies. Related documents are SO 006 859-865. (Author/KSM)
