Not Your Family Farm
Tenopir, Carol; Baker, Gayle; Grogg, Jill E.
Library Journal, v132 n9 p34-38 May 2007
The information industry continues to consolidate, just as agribusiness has consolidated and now dominates farming. Both the family farm and the small information company still exist but are becoming rarer in an age of mergers, acquisitions, and increased economies of scale. Small companies distinguish themselves by high quality, special themes, or useful tools to keep and build their customer base. The database marketplace this year was dominated by the news of several large acquisitions. Yet, even the largest companies in the database marketplace are feeling pressure from Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft. There are a lot of worries from database providers but they are working on ways to integrate social networks, provide increased depth within their specialties, and make their products stand out in order to succeed on the information farms of the future. A table listing organizations and their database services is provided, along with company profiles of these firms. (Contains 1 table.)
