Accelerating Innovation
Education Week, v31 n23 suppl pS1-S20 Mar 2012
The word "innovation" seems to be in everyone's lexicon these days; it's even turning up as part of new education job titles in school districts and states. The ideas that undergird it are animating a growing movement that's spurring new policies, programs, and products that carry with them the potential to transform how students learn and how schools operate. This special report, produced with support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, examines the education marketplace and new approaches to schooling that are changing K-12. Articles in this supplement include: (1) "The Pace of Educational Change Quickens" (Kevin Bushweller); (2) "Startups Seek to Master the Education Market" (Nirvi Shah); (3) "Houston Schools Take a Page From Best Charters" (Christina A. Samuels); (4) "Studies Find Charters Vary in Quality, Creativity" (Jaclyn Zubrzycki); (5) "Variety of Models Fuels Hybrid Charter Growth" (Ian Quillen); (6) "Companies Target Hybrid-Charter Market" (Ian Quillen); (7) "States Loosening Entrenched "Seat Time" Requirements" (Sean Cavanagh); (8) "Innovation Offices Pop Up in State Education Agencies" (Sean Cavanagh); (9) "Feds Aim to Spark Fresh Thinking on Schooling" (Michele McNeil); (10) "Q&A: Khan Academy Creator Talks About K-12 Innovation" (Lesli A. Maxwell); (11) "Q&A: Startl Co-Founder Outlines Strategies for Startups" (Ian Quillen); and (12) "Q&A: Ed. Dept. Innovation Chief Articulates Federal Role" (Michele McNeil).
