Communication Skills for Workplace Assessors.

This document is designed to help develop the communication skills of individuals training for the position of workplace assessor in Australia's National Training Framework and practicing workplace assessors who require additional assistance with on-the-job communication skills. The document consists of 11 units of study that each contain some or all of the following: background information; written learning activities; role play/discussion activities; and checklists. The following are among the topics covered: (1) reading skills (skimming, scanning, reference skills); (2) informing appropriate personnel (negotiation, assertive techniques, presenting one's case in terms of others' needs, solving problems creatively, other language skills in the negotiation process); (3) assessment information sessions; (4) putting candidates at ease; (5) giving instructions; (6) questioning techniques (types of questions, questions to avoid, question scenarios, starting a question bank); (7) seeking clarification; (8) giving feedback (inviting candidates to self-assess, feedback to candidates who are competent, feedback to candidates who are not yet competent, language skills involved in giving negative information); (9) nonverbal communication (how we communicate, body language, use of space, dress/appearance, tone of voice); (10) plain English (suggestions to make writing clearer, designing a document, writing instructions); and (11) writing feedback reports and recommendations.
