The Spirit of the Teacher
Smith, Olynda
Montessori Life: A Publication of the American Montessori Society, v25 n3 p46-49 Fall 2013
"The real preparation for education is a study of one's self. The training of the teacher who is to help life is something far more than a learning of ideas. It includes the training of character, it is a preparation of the spirit."--Maria Montessori". It is common knowledge among Montessorians that spiritual preparation was something Montessori declared of utmost importance, as evidenced by the quote at the beginning of this article. The practice--the way Montessori educators prepare themselves --is not discussed often in professional contexts. Here the author discusses how imperative it is that this part of the Montessori philosophy be brought back into focus for the health of classrooms, for harmony among adults in schools, and for this work of education to reach its maximum effectiveness. This article provides suggestions to encourage educators to step into the best parts of themselves so that they can embody the principles they want children to learn in their classrooms.
