Depression: What It Is and How to Deal With It: A Manual.
Hartigan, Kevin J.; Weiskott, Gerald N.
This manual is designed to help counseling personnel understand and deal with depression. It begins by defining depression (the "common cold of psychopathology") and listing a number of typical symptoms, giving mild, moderate and severe manifestations. It then offers seven different treatment approaches or theories. Directly or indirectly, these theories most frequently account for negative expectancy, dejected mood, behavioral deficits, retarded physical activity, loss of libido and appetite and motivational deficits. A majority of the theories acknowledge faulty cognitions, passivity and avoidance as manifestations of depression. The manual concludes by outlining a workshop designed to help college students manage depression and stress. The workshop (two sessions of three hours each) is not intended to replace individual therapy but can be used as a productive adjunct to it. (Author/BP)
