English Teaching Profile: Syrian Arab Republic.
British Council, London (England). English Language and Literature Div.
A description of the status and role of English language use and instruction in Syria, in which English has been given the status of the first foreign language, is presented. The following topics are reported on: (1) general usage; (2) English within the educational system, including the length of English training, testing, syllabus construction, English for special purposes, adult education, and radio and television instruction; (3) the qualifications, supply, training, and recruitment of teachers; (4) the availability of instructional and audiovisual materials; (5) administrative issues related to English instruction; (6) development and planning of English instruction; (7) English instruction outside the public educational system; (8) British, American, and other agency support for English instruction; (9) commercial and creative publishing opportunities; (10) current research; and (11) other information sources. It is concluded that although there are many shortcomings in English instruction at all levels, there have also been significant accomplishments in enrollment increases, expansion of postsecondary education, a general educational shift in favor of English use, and adequate supplies of texts and teachers. Further consolidation of English as the primary foreign language is foreseen, along with opportunities to improve standards and materials. An appendix lists the required books for students of the English Department of Damascus University, 1983-84. (MSE)
