Malach, Alyson
This document is intended to help learning organizations and practitioners meet the needs of their black and minority ethnic adult students. The introduction explains how the guide was developed and discusses the concept of "color blindness." The next six sections examine the following topics: (1) social and economic issues; (2) effective strategies for reaching black and minority ethnic learners; (3) support for learning; (4) curriculum issues; (5) staff development and organizational change; and (6) equal opportunities. Each section includes some or all of the following: examples of good practice; case studies; and checklists. The conclusion recaps the guide's objectives and key messages. A section entitled "Resources" presents various supplementary materials, including the following: examples of stereotyping and strategies for combating stereotyping; information about the role of faith and spirituality in black and minority ethnic people's lives; strategies for creating organizational change; a questionnaire on equal opportunities in the workplace; a checklist for improving access; an exploration of the implications of equal opportunities issues within the curriculum; a diversity quiz; good practices in developing appropriate resources; and factors to consider when evaluating, developing, and selecting suitable learning materials.
