Parent Leadership Exchange: The First Five Years
Institute for Responsive Education
The overall goal of the Parent Leadership Exchange (PLE) is to improve student outcomes by increasing the capacity of family and community members to help children achieve high academic standards. To achieve this goal, PLE established a continuing resource to increase the leadership skills of parent leaders, paid or volunteer, working in elementary and secondary school-or community-based parent involvement or partnership work. PLE prepares and assists these parent leaders to help schools and communities develop effective school, family, and community partnership programs that empower parents and community members to support children's learning. This report indicates, the needs and challenges of parent leaders have changed during the past five years. Federal legislation and local standards have impacted what parents need to know to help their children succeed, yet budget increases have not always met the demand. The role of parent leaders has, therefore, become more critical to the overall strategies of schools to improve student learning. PLE has kept up with the changes through the re-designing of workshops, collaborative efforts with other agencies, such as the Parent's Place, a MA statewide Parent Information and Resource Center (PIRC), and the Face to Face Program at the Home for Little Wanderers, which is a Boston-serving PIRC, in addition to providing information via the quarterly newsletter and the IRE web site. This report offers a glimpse of the tremendous success of PLE during the past five years. Attached are: (1) PLE List of Workshops, 2000-2005; (2) Massachusetts Coalition for Parent Involvement in Education (MCPIE) Chart; (3) Four Levels of Evaluation Tool; and (4) Sample of the PLE "Exchange" Newsletter.
