Moving the Discussion from Pathology to Context: An Interview with Laurence J. Coleman
Cross, Tracy L.
Roeper Review, v28 n1 p5 Fall 2005
For many years Larry Coleman created and ran programs for gifted children, studied the great (and not so great) works in the field of gifted studies, then quietly went about conducting studies that became watermarks in the field. His work on stigma of giftedness, the cognitive map of expertise of a single teacher of gifted children, the importance and nature of context in understanding talent development, and the relationship between approach and knowledge construction have set the standards for the field. Larry Coleman holds the Daso-Herb Chair in Gifted Studies at the University of Toledo. He is the author of numerous articles, book chapters, and books and presently serves as editor of the Journal for the Education of the Gifted. Dr. Coleman was awarded the 2000 Distinguished Scholar Award of the National Association for Gifted Children, the 2001 Paper of the Year for Gifted Child Quarterly, and a Fulbright scholarship for study in India. Here, the author interviews Dr. Coleman about his passion for studying gifted education. (Contains 11 notes.)
