Using Out-of-Class Quizzes to Promote Cognitive Engagement
Johnson, Danette Ifert
Communication Teacher, v21 n2 p35-38 Apr 2007
This article describes a quizzing activity that aims to facilitate student cognitive engagement at a variety of Bloom's taxonomy levels and promote reading of course assignments. The quizzing activity described is potentially useful for any course. Because it is based on Bloom's cognitive taxonomy, which is itself designed to address the spectrum of cognitive tasks desirable in the college classroom, the activity is flexible enough to address a variety of course goals from basic knowledge to advanced synthesis and evaluation. If used across courses within a curriculum, it can be a useful tool for intentionally moving students toward higher-level thinking, while promoting preparation for class and engagement with course material.
