Using Questions to Teach the National Standards in Rehearsal: Asking the Right Questions during Rehearsal Can Help Students Improve Performance as Well as Develop Musicianship
Tutt, Kevin
Music Educators Journal, v93 n5 p38 May 2007
In this article, the author discusses a rehearsal technique that would teach the content outlined in the National Standards for Arts Education and improve performance at the same time. A major component of this rehearsal technique needs to be increasing students' listening and analytical skills, and one way to do that is to ask questions appropriate for the context. What makes a good question can depend on teachers' understanding of a number of variables that include, but are not limited to, the following factors: (1) students' cognitive level; (2) Students' technical level in relation to the music's difficulty; and (3) proximity of the performance. There are some basic guidelines to help teachers decide what questions to ask. A basic rule of asking questions is that teachers should attempt to vary their question types so all students can participate. Questions can be applied in two ways: to improve basic technical issues and to encourage students to become complete, independent, thinking musicians--the goal of comprehensive musicianship and the National Standards. Asking the right questions during rehearsal can help students improve performance as well as develop musicianship. (Contains 11 notes and 1 table.)
