"A Vital Force in Education": How Teachers Can Develop Professionally
Neel, Marcia
Teaching Music, v15 n2 p44 Oct 2007
Every time music educators gather, whether at a national conference or at a local coffee shop, professional development can occur. The common denominator is always communication of ideas and experiences that result in some sort of learning--generally among all parties involved. As such, all school districts should invest in high-quality and effective professional development for the simple reason that it helps students when the teacher is better prepared. For more than twenty years, the author of this article has worked in a district that gives high priority to professional development. In this article, the author shares some of the most successful practices in facilitating professional development among teachers. Some of these ideas involve expanded learning at the state, national, and international levels, whereas others may be achieved through local means. The author believes that professional development must be instituted where it is currently absent so that music teachers can begin their path to improved teaching skills at the very first opportunity.
